Heraclitus principle / One hundred years of coal in Czech art
Gallery of Modern Art Roudnice nad Labem
16.06.2023 - 22.10.2023
Curator: Magdalena Deverová
Few raw materials occupy such a prominent position in art as coal. As a material, it has been a basic artistic tool since prehistoric times, and is currently a socially controversial topic. Logically, it resonates most in regions with a coal past and an ecological footprint, which also includes Ústí. Coal is the bane of daily bread, a remarkable glittering mineral and a devastated landscape. Coal is the environment of the political lobby as well as a clogged mine. It produces wealth while erasing villages from the maps.
The coal shadow is carried throughout a century of our history. The group exhibition includes an unbiased artistic approach as well as a fascination with the matter of combustible fossils. He discovers the "beauty" and the reverse side of the mining landscape. It reflects the socialist celebration of mining as well as the critical environmental view of today. It will take place in a town that belongs to a region of the mining industry, yet is far enough from all the notorious sites to bear objective witness to one country and one landscape over the course of a hundred years. The broadly conceived exhibition, spread over the entire space of Galerie Roudnice, will present well-known names as well as forgotten works of the Czech art scene. Great emphasis is placed on contemporary work. It will cover many artistic disciplines from oil painting and graphic techniques to installation, performance and video. Lectures and panel discussions will also be an integral part of the group exhibition project.
