ATLAS NEW CONSTELLATIONS
The East Bohemian Gallery Pardubice
05.12.2020 - 30.05.2021
curator: Lenka Dolanová
The exhibition presents various approaches to the format of the artist's book, ie a publication created as a collective work of art, mostly by one author or author group. These books go beyond ordinary production with a non-traditional concept and high quality of overall processing. They experiment with the diversity of bookbinding, they do not adhere to the usual format - they acquire, for example, the form of a spatial work -, the emphasis is, of course, on typography, font, choice of paper, use of non-traditional materials. There are unusual transformations of the story, which may be completely missing or based directly on the structure of book processing. Various exhibition platforms will be on display at the exhibition - the authors' own editions as well as the productions of small publishers (Xaoxax, Bylo bylo, Adolescent, etc.).
Jan Mericka, a native of Pardubice, will exhibit his large-format artist's books. The graphic studio Upupaepop operates in Eastern Bohemia, and the young author Zuzana Bramborova also comes from there, whose artist's books deal, among other things, with the phenomenon of gardening settlements. By Milos Sejn, the exhibition will feature the book Down The Maple Brook, which captures his journey through the Giant Mountains. The stay in the mountain landscape is also essential for the book / atlas / diary Map of the Mountains of Adam Kaspar, which captures mainly the Jeseniky Mountains and the Iron Mountains.
Illustrator and graphic artist Klara Zahradkova from the small Xao publishing house will also be represented at the exhibition. Hana Puchova will present the book Sonina Power, published by Xao last year. Jan Cumlivski creates books with original fonts and experiments with analog techniques (eg books In the Sign of the Pentode, Vate pisky, Kolchoz, Povl or Simulator 1.0.) Martin Kubat will present his artist's books for children and adults (Before Midnight, Purgation, It is evening, release the Devil!), Nikola Horeni (The School Trip or I wish), Katerina Cerna a collection of small authorial publications, such as 13 horror films for school groups or Rabbits. Jan Vicar will exhibit a unique linocut bibliophile Hold, illustrating an ecological dystopian poem. Graphic artist and typographer Lubos Drtina, who works in the Vysocina region, will present the books Darkness, Let's Be! or Moth, Sea. The illustrator Tereza Ricanova will also exhibit her handwritten and drawn books / notebooks. The artist's books by the photographer Marketa Kinterova touch on the visuality of public space, at the exhibition they will develop into a spatial installation. In his samizdat, printed for example on a thermal printer, Viktor Vejvoda deals with the ecology of consumption, issues of value and improvisation.
