Naked in the Mud, Lying in a Stream / Documentary about artist Miloš Šejn arrives in cinemas this autumn

The feature-length documentary essay Because I Have To will be released in Czech cinemas on 8 October 2026. The directorial debut of Jakub Kučera follows internationally recognised visual artist Miloš Šejn (born 1947), whose performances in the landscape explore questions of existence, human sensitivity, and our relationship with place and time.
The film had its world premiere in the Imagina section of the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. A special preview will take place on 17 September at Čistírna1906 in Prague, followed by a gala premiere at Kino Atlas on 6 October. Distributor Mannschaft will bring the film to cinemas, galleries and other unconventional venues throughout the Czech Republic. Many screenings will also be accompanied by discussions with the filmmakers.
Rather than presenting a conventional biographical portrait of an artist, the film ventures beneath the surface of what is visible. An observational camera follows Miloš Šejn as he undertakes artistic actions in the landscape. Amid mud and water, upon stone, through breath and silence, expressive editing and immersive music transform the footage into an intensely physical audiovisual experience.
This is not a story about an artist, but an attempt to allow viewers to experience the world as he perceives it: in the present moment, through a heightened awareness of everything that surrounds us here and now.
